“Write for us”
Here’s a cool job finding tip…
The Spiteful Critic has just published my article “The Elusive Flying Car.” The article explores why we don’t have flying cars (and why we probably never will).
And just for fun, here’s IBM’s famous commercial “Where are the flying cars?”
I have some stuff that’s about to be published (yes, stuff, as in more than one). And I find myself wondering how candid I should be on my blog. It’s one thing to write about religion, politics and my personal life. But it’s another thing to freely admit my failures and weaknesses as a writer.
Also, for a time, it seemed as if I was spending more time writing for my blog rather than prospective editors. But I’ve now found my groove and I think this journal can now help keep me focused while allowing me to figure out shit by articulating what’s going on in my head.
I have created a new blog called Media Vérité.
The site is meant to be a catalogue of outstanding, legally available documentaries, lectures and other educational content.
You can visit the site at www.mediaverite.org
It’s difficult enough trying to finish a piece of writing…then you have to find a place to publish it. Popular, big name publications aren’t interested in writers who are just starting out. Fortunately, most periodicals are small and novice friendly. But not just any old publication will do.
I have a hard time finding small publications that jive with my sensibilities as a writer (i.e. unpretentious). So whenever I read something that I like in an anthology or periodical I pay attention to the author’s bio.
While reading Best of Creative Nonfiction Vol. 2, I came across an engaging story called Spite, by Anne Trumbore. I looked up the author blurb in the back of the book and found that the story was originally published in a e-publication called The Big Ugly Review and after reading a couple of stories I added the site to my bookmarks list.
Instead of blindly e-mailing stories and pitches to magazines I find through Google, I’m making more of an effort to expand the list of publications I actually read. And I think I have more of a shot at getting published in a small pub that I enjoy, rather than some generic literary review.
